Benefits of Walking

The Walking the Way to Health scheme has been running successfully across the East Riding of Yorkshire since 2004.  Some 6,000 people attend the walks each year.  A total of 168 trained leaders run the walks from 13 sites  (Beverley, Bridlington, Driffield, Goole, Haltemprice, Holme on Spalding Moor,  Hornsea, Howden, Leven, Pocklington, Sewerby, South Cave and Withernsea).

 

Walking can provide many health benefits, particularly in relation to some of the UK's major health problems.  As part of an active lifestyle, walking can help to reduce the risk of heart disease, strokes, cancer, obesity, diabetes, and osteoporosis.  It can also improve mental health and overall quality of life.  Why not give it a try?  You might like it!

 

A walker and trained walk leader from Goole has given us an insight into walking:-

 

"I started attending the Walking the Way to Health scheme within the East Riding two years ago.  I had previously had some health problems including spinal surgery and open heart surgery, and had started a gentle exercise class which enabled me to go at my own pace. This then led onto country walks as I became stronger and fitter.

 

I do not particularly enjoy walking but these walks allow me to go at my own pace.  I now go enthusiastically because I enjoy the social contact with the group.  I have met many new people and made some good friends.

 

I am now much fitter and, having lost 13kg (2 stone) in weight, feel good about myself.  It has encouraged me to join other classes at the leisure centre – all of which I enjoy".
